Acquisition - Clue "It" Edition (based on the Stephen King book and mini series)

Now this was long time coming, probably one of the scariest mini series ever produced. It certainly deserves its own clue variation! This was the other Christmas release for 2019 that I picked up. Still thinking about the other ones, they might be a bit harder to find as the year goes forward. These special editions seem to disappear pretty fast.

This Hasbro edition comes in the current standard sized box with the smaller square board. Playing pieces are cardboard and placed in plastic stands. The six weapons are pewter which seems to have become a standard in the current Clue variations. As a Type II game it comes with the intrigue deck, with this deck the bad cards are the red balloons. First seven are no effect but bad things happen with #8! The board is square but its one of the compressed versions so not as many squares to move through.

If you are Stephen King fan this one is probably worth picking up!

The compressed board makes for a bit faster games, less movement squares between locations.

Player personalities with their powers on the back, usable once per games

Acquisition - Clue "Scooby Doo" Edition (3rd)

Christmas time is always seems to bring out new Clue variations. I counted 7 this past Christmas Season. Five of those will have to wait, for this post we will talk about everything Scooby!

The first edition of Scooby Doo was one of the first variations of the game that I became aware of and must have been published in the early 2000s. First edition comes in the long box with the larger board and featured pewter characters and weapons. It uses the standard Clue rules.

The second edition was stuffed into a small box, just big enough to fit the board itself along with the pieces underneath. It also featured the same pewter characters and weapons. It also uses the standard Clue rules.

Third edition, from Hasbro, is a bit of a different dog. It is in the current standard box with the reduced sized and square board. The pewter characters have been replaced with the current generation of cardboard cutouts and clear plastic stands. This edition uses the Type II rules; each character has a power usable once per games, in addition there are "?" on the board that allow a player to draw from the intrigue deck. The intrigue deck allows players to do different things but also includes monster cards. The first seven monster cards don't have any affect but the player the draws the eighth monster card is out of the game and the monsters are shuffled back into the deck.

The Scooby Doo edition of the board is the same as the first two editions with the edition of "?".

The components coming right out of the box

The weapons, same as in the first two editions.

Personality cards with power on the back

Two decks, the clue deck and the intrigue deck

Room Cards, same as in the first two editions.

The character cards, with Mrs White to round out to six. Same group as in the first two editions

The weapons, same as in the first two editions

The intrigue cards, with eight of our favorite monsters. I wonder why they didn't use Scooby Snacks?  Seems like a lost opportunity.

Clue - The Legend of Zelda

I know, how many copies of Clue can one person own? Well, I have room for more so the world may never know. My kids think that they are the video generation but really I'm part of the first video generation and the Legend of Zelda first appeared on the original Nintendo. While my family didn't own a Nintendo (we were an Atari family) I certainly spent plenty of time on my friends' machines! So combining the Legend of Zelda and Clue is like finding the Holy Grail!

So that brings us to Clue; The Legend of Zelda. As with any Clue game (well most of them) this can be played just as a straight up Classic Clue game. This one falls into what I will refer to as Clue Variant II. In Variant II each of the players' has a power than can be used once per game, in addition if a player lands on a question mark square, rolls a question mark on the die, or are moved to a location to be questioned then you may draw an encounter card (called Boss Cards in Zelda). Follow the directions on the card. As part of that deck there are eight Ganondorf cards. The first seven are harmless but if you draw the eighth Ganondorf card you are out of the game and the eight Ganondorf cards are shuffled back into the deck (this is variation from other Clue games featuring the encounter cards where the game just ends when the eighth card is drawn).

I was pretty excited about this one and I'm looking forward to giving it a go. The only thing that I was disappointed with is that the card deck seems a little flimsy. I should also start cataloging the rule variations just to see which versions fall into Classic, Variant I and Variant II.

Rules, Boss Deck and the Character Cards. I find all the cards to be a bit on the flimsy side.

I didn't think it was possible to make the pad any smaller but someone figured out a way. This game comes with my least favorite style of pawns, clear plastic covers and cardboard avatars to go in them. I have ripped a few of these in the past, I suggest cutting carefully with scissors rather than trying to tear them apart on the perforations. The dice also have the "1" replaced with a question mark.

The character power cards. Usable once per game.

The Boss Deck

And the board. I love the graphics on the board.

Clue - Supernatural Edition

I was quite surprised to see this one sitting on a retailer's shelf so I had to pick it up. I paid full retail on this one but since its going for at least double that on eBay I felt it was a decent buy. I also spotted copies of Clue - Zelda and Clue - The Walking Dead in the same store, I'll be going back at some point to acquire those.

This is one of those editions that's price is driven by the incredible popularity of the TV show. I watched the first couple of seasons and I have been surprised at the longevity of the show. It was only a matter of time before it ended up as a Clue game.

I have decided to name the variants of the game, just to make it easier. Supernatural is what I will now refer to as Clue Game Variant 1.

Variant 1 adds a second deck of cards, typically called the Intrigue deck. You acquire an Intrigue Card either rolling a question mark on one of the dice, or by landing on a question mark on the board, or being moved to another location as part of a "rumor". Each card allows some kind of action to be taken by the player. Also in the deck are 8 cards, for Supernatural they are Demon Cards (In Star Wars I believe they are Stormtroopers, I will have to check), they are simply put to the one side, but keep track of them! When the 8th card is drawn the game ends. It adds an interesting little time element to the game.

In addition, each character in the game has a power that they can use once in the game.

Let's take a look at Clue Supernatural:

Instead of nice tokens, this version comes with cardboard pieces and plastic bases for them

The weapons, however, are very cool,

The Intrigue Cards

Character Cards, I would recommend shuffling them and dealing each player a character.

The card backs. I'm not sure about the cards on the right. There are two of them and both sides are printed with the wood planks.
